This project, right out of the gate, was interesting. The class was given the assignment to “journey” from the art building on campus to an assigned location. However you got there was completely up to the person. Then, document what you saw along the way. Once you reached your destination, you made your way back to class and created phrases based off of what you wrote down. This phrase was then meant to be the inspiration for a collage made out of magazine clippings.
The two phrases I focused on were: “There are more important things in life than your phone and football.” and “Why wear heels when you could wear sneakers and be comfortable?” The epitome of youthful angst from an art student going to school in the south! I was so angry that the only thing I saw on my “journey” were people buried in their smart phone (a rather new technology at the time), people only concerned with football rather than their education, or females walking long distances across campus in heels just for the sake of looking cute. Now that I am a bit older, I get it. But at the time, it was infuriating to me. There I said it! lol
Below are the two most successful pieces out of this project. I think they capture the chaotic nature of the theme I was going for at the time. This project really opened my eyes to what you could do with design. Taking something from a traditional 2D medium like collage and then mixing it with digital elements was really exciting. It actually laid the foundation for what later became my senior project – The Coheed & Cambria Box Set.
